A blog dedicated to the researchers who dyed a captured chimp's fur pink, then released it. The other chimps promptly tore it to pieces.

Yooper travelblogue

.
Back from the Yooper, with pictures, even!

We left KC last Saturday morning about 7, and made it just past Escanaba. It was 10:00 local time, and we were both exhausted with a bit over 100 miles left to go. Instead of pushing on and having to roust someone out of bed, we stopped for the night at a Best Western. Had a great breakfast at a place called the Delona Restaurant the next morning and pushed on for my dad's place near McMillan.

We got there about noon, and spent the afternoon catching up on family stuff. It was a somber day despite the happiness of being together again. Last Sunday would have been my mom's 79th birthday - she died last year on the morning of their 58th wedding anniversary. We ended the evening by scattering her ashes at Lake Superior, near a place called Deer Park - so small it's not even on the map. She'd made my dad promise back when it became apparent she wasn't going to get better this time, and he kept his promise. Afterwards we stood on the beach and watched the sun go down.

But enough sad stuff, and on to the PICTURES! I just know you wanna see the pictures. This is the Internet equivalent of the neighbors who used to bore you with slides of their vacation if you're old enough to remember such things. So, onward!

First pic is the entrance to Sable Falls, second is the Falls from near the bottom. Third is my dad, the chick magnet. Almost 80 and he's still got it, as evidenced by the little cutie in the red top checking him out. Last pic is another view of the Falls.

A couple of pics of Lake Superior near Grand Marais, one of my mom's favorite places.

Tuesday morning my wife wasn't feeling well, so she stayed in bed while my brother and I went down to Lake Michigan. You could see the storm coming in, and it was a doozy. The two pics below were taken about ten minutes before it hit.

Wednesday morning my wife was feeling better, so we went to Tahquamenon Falls, another of my mom's faves. First pic is my dad's house - the rest are the upper section of the Falls.

The first pic below shows a tree brought down by woodpeckers, which had bored holes nearly a foot long and a good three or four inches both across and deep. Woodpeckers are one of the tree's few natural enemies, but as the picture shows, they can do enormous damage. The rest of the images are the lower section of Tahquamenon Falls and the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point.

The building shown in the next to the last picture above is a bed and breakfast that runs $150/night - a bargain for its location.

The three pics below are from Oswald's Bear Ranch. Their sign explains it better than I can.

The rest of the pictures are from the Sherlock Bed and Breakfast on Watson Street (get it?) in Ripon, Wisconsin, where we spent Friday night on the trip back to KC. Great place, and quite reasonable at $80/night. Pat's home-cooked breakfast sent us off in style Saturday morning.

And t-t-t-that's all, folks.
